Tocqueville Society

Tocqueville MembersAlexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville was only 26 years old when he traveled all over the United States in 1831. His observations, readings and discussions formed the basis of Democracy in America, a study of American society and politics.

One of his most important observations was that Americans hold in common a unique willingness to work for the public welfare - a tendency to lead faithful support to neighbors and countrymen, espeically in times of need.

It is this spirit that United Way Worldwide created the United Way Tocqueville Society in 1984. Today, the Society is one of the world's most prestigious institutions for individuals who are passionate about improving peoples' lives and strengthening communities.
