Allocations Volunteers

United Way supports more than 300 programs in 130 organizations. Decisions about how to invest funds in programs that solve community problems are made by teams of volunteers who review funding proposals from applicant agencies. People from diverse backgrounds and experiences are needed to make this effort a success.

What is the role of a Resource Investment volunteer?
To serve on a team of volunteers charged with reviewing proposals for United Way funding from health and human service programs in the community. After reviewing and rating the proposals, the volunteers will make a recommendation to the United Way Board of Directors.

What is the time commitment to serve as a volunteer?
All volunteers are required to participate in a three-hour training, after which they will be assigned to an allocations team. Each team will then have three 3-hour meetings to complete its assignment. Meetings will take place from early September to late October. In addition to meetings, volunteers should be prepared to spend approximately 12 hours in preparation time – reviewing orientation materials, reading and rating funding proposals.

What qualifications are required to participate?
Allocation Team Members should have the following qualifications:
• An interest in the strength of the Kansas City area’s human services network.
• Willingness to make a commitment to participate in at least one funding cycle, with potential to continue for three years.
• The ability to attend the meetings associated with participation on an allocations team,
which take place during the business day.
[Please note: Employees of any agency applying for United Way funding are not eligible to serve as an allocation volunteer.]

What types of programs do Resource Investment volunteers review?
United Way invests donor contributions into health and human service programs that address the community’s most pressing needs. These programs strengthen families and children, improve health, strengthen neighborhoods, promote financial stability of low-income people and provide a “safety net” for people in crisis.
